Planting Orchards

In Spring 2009, we started a completely new venture - the creation of a cider orchard (starting with over 45acres with a further 17 acres planned for 2010). We have consulted conservation groups such as FWAG, with regard to how best to plant the orchard for maximum benefit of local wildlife.
The apples are being grown on contract for Westons Cider, A local company, who have been producing cider for over 100 years. The apple stock will be planted over this Spring. The main varieties are Michelin and Dabinett. These will take 5-7 years to come to main fruit, so it is a long-term investment for the future.
We sourced both the trees and the contractor from within Herefordshire so as to keep the miles down and also the trees were grown in similar soils to us.
